Tucked right in the middle of Christ’s teachings within the book of Matthew is a very short and powerful verse that caught my attention this morning. This verse comes after the well know beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11) and much before He calls for our great commission (Matthew 28:18-20) to teach the world his ways.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
The words ‘shall break …. shall teach men so” and “shall do and teach” that really caught my attention. It’s not just about what we do ourselves, God is also paying attention to what we teach others. Scary to think that to some extent I will be judged for every moment of my life, since we are all constantly teaching others through example. This is especially so with our kids. It’s easy to remember to point out to my kids when I have kept a commandment, but how often have I unknowingly failed to keep commandments, even little ones, in front of my children? What was I teaching them then?Tags: Parenting, scripture, Christianity
